In local advertisements, this store boasts 'The Largest Selection of Christian Literature in Newfoundland!' If this is the case, I'm slightly aggrieved at the paucity of reading material in this province. It IS a goodly sized bookstore--the ONLY bookstore, I begin to think, outside the Chapters and Coles located in St. John's. The ability of Newfoundland to sustain a store specific to Christian Literature, where secular stores like 'The Book Mark' with a broader appeal have been forced to close down, speaks to the island's conservative character. There are other signs of it. On my bus ride into Grandfalls-Windsor with DRL coachlines (the island's equivalent to Greyhound) the film playing on the movie screens was a Christian flick. I was surprised--in Ontario, someone would kick up a fuss for playing religious films on public transit. Northern Manitoba has a similar character though. Religiosity seems endemic to rural settings, where community is central to people's lives.

The bookstore carries the usual merchandise found in Christian stores--novels, devotionals, bibles, cards, religious jewelry and figures, toys and movies. They also carry some children's series that may not be explicitly Christian, and children's craft supplies--a wise marketing move, in a town without a bookstore or Michael's. Still, it's smaller than the shops in small towns back home.
